Charlson resigns football coaching position
Longtime Clear Lake High School Assistant Football Coach Curt Charlson has submitted his coaching resignation, effective for the 2015 season. Charlson has been an integral part of the successful Lion football program since the fall of 1974.
The Clear Lake School Board accepted Charlson’s resignation Thursday, along with that of Head Football Coach Fred Wieck. Wieck’s decision to step down after 27 years had been announced earlier.
“It seems like a good time to pass the baton,” said Charlson, defensive coordinator for the Lions during much of his coaching career. He noted he will continue to teach at CLHS.
During his tenure, Charlson said he has been pleased to work with many skilled colleagues, dating back to his start under Head Coach Norm Theiss. “They all have done a great job,” he said.
Charlson is reluctant to talk about his part in the program’s success, instead giving credit to the players.
“It’s the kids,” he said. “You can be good coaches and have grate facilities and equipment, but if you don’t have kids with big hearts you don’t have anything.”
