Cards top Lynx; fall to Mohawks in close bout

It was a week of ups and downs for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team. They spilt a pair of games last week.

GHV 4, Webster City 2

After being shut-out by Webster City the last two years, victory was sweet for the Cardinals on Tuesday, April 15. They downed the Lynx, 4-2.
“All of the girls played well and are coming together as a team,” said Coach Josh Banse.

GHV’s defense had another good game, led by Maddie Tusha and Tiara Van Gerpen. Mackenzie Van Gerpen, who has been out with an injury, also added her skills to the Cardinal defensive effort.
Scoring goals for GHV were Riannan Kadrilik, Emily Spilman, Autumn Weaver and Mackenzie Haag.
Weaver was the only player to record an assist.
Goalkeeper Sam Betz had 11 saves for the game. There were 20 shots on goal.

Mason City, 4, GHV 3
The Cardinals put up a good fight, but it was not enough as Mason City topped GHV 4-3 on Thursday, April 17.
“Mason City might have the best tandem of strikers we will see this year,” said Coach Josh Banse. “Our defense did a nice job containing them once we settled down.”
The game started a little shaky for the Cardinals, but some late game adjustments to the formation and a never-give-up attitude helped GHV to come to within one point of the Mohawks.
Scoring goals for the Cardinals were Emily Spilman, Payton Bamrick and Tiara Van Gerpen.
Sam Betz, GHV’s goalkeeper, had 12 saves. There were 20 shots on goal.
“Even though it was a loss, we are still heading in the right direction,” said Banse.
The Cardinals travel to Fort Dodge on Thursday, April 24, and they face CAL/Hampton-Dumont/Belmond-Klemme on Friday, April 25.
