Cardinals split games around holiday

The G-H/V baseball team had an up and down week.  The Cardinals split games with North Iowa foes before the holiday, then split a pair of games played at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo Monday, July 8.  The .500 week put the Cardinals at 10-16 overall.

G-H/V 4, WEST HANCOCK 2

Zach Buseman allowed just two hits, helping the Cardinals to a 4-2 victory over West Hancock Monday, July 1.  Buseman was also credited with all four RBIs in the game.

Spencer Shaw and Nathan Hrubes each stroked doubles in the win.  Hrubes was the only player with multiple hits.  He had two in three appearances at the plate.

The Cardinals broke out to a 3-0 lead at the end of one inning then added another in the fifth.  West Hancock threatened with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Josh Theobald came in to relieve Buseman and shut the doors on the Eagles.  He earned a save, allowing just one hit and walking one in the final frame.  Buseman got the win with five strikeouts; he walked four.

FOREST CITY 18, G-H/V 3

Five G-H/V errors helped Forest City to a lopsided in over the Cardinals Tuesday, July 2.  

The bats were also quiet for the Cardinals.  They had just two hits off Indian ace Thomas O’Rourke, provided by Josh Theobald and Zach Buseman.  

Spencer Shaw received two of O’Rourke’s three walks in the game.  He scored on a double off the bat of Theobald.  Nick Roberts picked up two RBIs on his fielder’s choice.

Forest City scored two in the first inning and piled on 12 in the second on their way to the four inning victory.  Heath Hutcheson was the losing pitcher.  He gave up six hits and seven runs in one inning.  Keith Schwickerath threw one and one-third innings, giving up three hits and nine runs. He walked five.  Matt Schroeder pitched one inning and gave up two hits and struck out two.  Two runs were charged to him.

G-H/V 13, COLO NESCO 1

The Cardinals provided some fireworks in their first game after the holiday.  They used 11 hits and  six stolen bases to propel themselves to a 13-1 five-inning victory over Colo-Nesco (11-13). 

Josh Theobald had a game to remember.  He threw a four-hitter, striking out eight and walking just one.  He also led the team with three hits.

Heath Hutcheson had two hits, including a double and finished with four RBIs.  Keith Schwickerath also had a pair of hits for the Cards.

R-S 13, G-H/V 0

The second game of the day was a polar opposite of the first.  Roland-Story, rated sixth in Class 2A with a 23-11 record, dominated in a 13-0 five inning game.

Roland-Story’s Zach Hovik tossed a one-hitter.  He struck out five and walked one in the win.

Nathan Hrubes was the only Cardinal to get a hit off the R-S ace.  

On the other side, Hrubes, Spencer Shaw and Derek Lonneman each pitched.  Nine runs were charged to Hrubes, who gave up seven hits and walked five in one and two-thirds innings.  R-S scored three runs in the first and added six in the second.  Shaw came in for two-thirds of an inning and gave up four hits and walked two.  Four runs were charged to Shaw.  Lonneman came in for the final inning and two-thirds and kept R-S off the base paths.
