Cardinals roll over North Union; fall to a tough West Fork team
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team split a pair of games to open the 2012-13 season.
G-H/V 70, North Union 41
Despite some first game jitters, the G-H/V boys came out firing on all cylinders and downed North Liberty 70-41 in basketball action on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
“I was not really confident in predicting how well this game would go,” said Coach Joe Albertson. “We threw a lot at the team in preseason and although they were making some progress, they were still trying to figure out how to play as a team.”
After the boys knocked down a few shots, they settled into the game and garnered a 16-9 first quarter lead. By halftime, the Cardinals led 30-20. G-H/V really started moving the ball offensively and opened a big lead in the fourth, outscoring the Warriors, 25-8, to win the game, 70-41.
Joel Toppin had an outstanding game for the Cardinals, leading the team in scoring with 17 points and seven assists. He also collected five rebounds.
“As consistent as Spencer Shaw was on defense, Joel Toppin matched it on the offensive end,” said Albertson.
Braden Meints also had a good game with 11 points, three assists and three rebounds.
Rounding out the scoring was Shaw and Nathan Hrubes with seven points apiece. Austin Kropp and Jake Wolf had six points apiece, while Zach Ryerson and Heath Hutcheson had four points each.
