Cardinals pick up a win and two losses in baseball action

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team picked up a win and a loss at the Lake Mills Tournament held on Saturday, June 1, and dropped a regular season game to Lake Mills on Monday.

St. Ansgar 8, G-H/V 6

It was a tight game for the Cardinals when they faced St. Ansgar at the Lake Mills Tournament.

The Saints opened the game strong, scoring four runs in the first inning.  G-H/V answered that with two runs in the first inning, followed by one run in the third and fifth innings and two in the sixth.  But the runs fell a little short  for the Cardinals and St. Ansgar captured the 8-6 victory.

The Cardinals managed 12 hits off St. Ansgar’s pitcher Jared Kramer.  Zach Buseman had the biggest bat for G-H/V with three hits on four at bats, with one being a double.  Heath Hutcheson, Braden Meints and Keith Schwickerath had two hits apiece and Spencer Shaw, Josh Theobald and Jimmy Ermer each had one hit.

Hutcheson scored three runs for the Cardinals and had one RBI.  Buseman scored one run and had one RBI.  Also scoring one run apiece were Shaw and Nick Roberts.

Hutcheson took the loss on the mound for the Cardinals.  He gave up 11 hits, eight runs, walked three and struck out two batters.

 

G-H/V 9, N-K 7

The Cardinals came out on top of a close game against Northwood-Kensett at the Lake Mills tourney.

The Vikings jumped to an early 4-2 lead after the first inning.  G-H/V had a strong second inning, scoring three runs and holding N-K scoreless.  The Cardinals scored one run in each of the remaining innings which proved to be enough for the final 9-7 victory.

Josh Theobald came in as a relief pitcher and picked up the win on the mound.  He gave up no hits or runs, walked one and struck out four.  Also pitching for the Cardinals was Nick Roberts and Keith Schwickerath.  Both Roberts and Schwickerath gave up four hits apiece and each walked four batters.  Roberts had four runs scored on him, while Schwickerath had three. Schwickerath struck out four batters.

Heath Hutcheson had a good night at the plate, collecting three hits, including a double, on four at-bats.  He scored one run and had three RBIs.

Roberts, Schwickerath and Braden Meints all collected one hit apiece.  Jimmy Ermer, Roberts and Schwickerath had one RBI each.

Roberts led the team in scoring, with three runs.  Derek Lonneman scored two runs for the Cardinals, while Meints, Schwickerath and Matt Schroder all scored one run apiece.

 

Lake Mills 4, G-H/V 3

Garner-Hayfield/Ventura traveled to Lake Mills on Monday, June 3, where they dropped a close, 4-3, contest to the Bulldogs.

Lake Mills scored three runs in the third inning and the Cards scored two.  The score was knotted at the end of the third inning, but the Bulldogs scored a final one in the fourth to seal the win.

Zach Buseman took the loss on the mound for the Cardinals.  He gave up six hits and four runs.  He walked two and struck out four.

Scoring runs for the Cards were Heath Hutcheson, Josh Theobald and Caleb Ploeger.  Braden Meints led the team with two hits and one RBI.  Spencer Shaw and Nathan Hrubes also had RBIs.
