Cardinals pick up two big soccer wins

It was an exciting week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team, as they picked up two big wins.

GHV 5, Hudson 4

The Cardinals pulled it all together on Monday night, April 20, and put together a 5-4 victory over Hudson.

“It was the most exciting win GHV has ever experienced,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “We played really well as a team and finally put all the things that we have been working on together.”

The game started a bit slow, with Hudson scoring in the first two minutes on a corner kick.  GHV responded quickly and scored at the five minute mark.  For the next 30 minutes the game went back and forth, until Hudson scored and then GHV responded with a goal of their own, 2-2.  Hudson scored again two minutes before halftime to take a 3-2 lead.

The Cardinals scored two more goals in the second half, while Hudson only managed one.  The game went into extra time and neither team scored, so the game went to PK’s.

“I was a little nervous when it came to the shootout, because we were going to rely on a couple of freshmen,” said Williams.

GHV won the coin toss and Connor Burke stepped up and buried his shot.  Goal keeper JJ Loschen had an amazing save.  Turner Albertson missed his shot and Loschen had another amazing save.  Ryan Meyers connected on his shot, and then Hudson’s goalie made his to push the OT score to 2-1.  Patrick Terhark made his shot and Loschen had another save for the 3-1 shootout victory.

Loschen had eight saves and four goals scored against him.  Logan Ryerson also stepped in as goalie and had one save.

Albertson led the team on offense with two goals scored, four shots taken and four shots on goal.

“This was the first time we have beat Hudson, which I consider a school that is always good in soccer.  I knew that we had a good team, but I was waiting to see us beat a good program to see how good we really are,” said Williams.

GHV 2, Humboldt 1

Coach Eric Williams was a little nervous for his team when they faced Humboldt on Thursday, April 23,  after a big win on Monday night against Hudson.

“I wasn’t sure how we would respond.  I was hoping it didn’t go to our heads,” said Williams.

The Cardinals opened the game strong and scored two goals in the first 40 minutes of play.  The team let up a bit in the second half and allowed Humboldt to score one goal.

“I was glad that we won, even though we may not have played out best, but we played well enough to win.  We are playing a lot of underclassmen and getting them some experience,” said Williams.

Connor Burke and Jack Bertilson scored the Cardinal’s two goals.  Dalton Basinger and Bertilson each provided an assist.

Jeremiah Loschen had eight saves in the game, while Chase Theobald had two.  The goal was scored against Theobald.

Burke had four shots on goals, while Bertilson had two.  Patrick Terhark, Nicholas Joynt and Loschen all had one shot on goals.
