Cardinals go 3-0 at Belmond triangular

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team competed in a triangular at Belmond on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and at the North Iowa Conference Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 1.

It was a good night for GHV on Tuesday, as they went 3-0 with wins over Belmond-Klemme, West Fork and Northwood-Kensett at the triangular.

“We wrestled well tonight,” said Coach Steve Smith.  

The NIC Tournament was a bit tougher on the Cardinals, as they placed sixth in the seven-team field with 94 points.  Osage won the tournament with 251.5 points, followed by Forest City with 199.5 points and Lake Mills with 158 points.

“At the conference tournament on Saturday, I didn’t feel like we competed to the best of our ability,” said Smith.

Nic Tusha was the team’s highest place winner.  Tusha placed second at 220-pounds.  He received a bye in the first round.  In the second round he pinned Caleb Ring of Osage in :20.  In the third round, he lost by fall to Alex Paulson, of Forest City in 1:46.

Connor Smith and Conner Shaw both placed third.

Smith, who wrestles at 182-pounds, received a bye in the first round.  In the second round he was pinned by Joe Malecek, of Osage, in 4:17.  He received a bye in the third round and won by major decision, 9-0, in the fourth round against Jon Anderson, of Lake Mills.

Shaw received a bye in the first round at 152-pounds.  He was pinned in the second round in 5:03.  In the third round, he pinned Brenden Weber, of Newman, in 1:50.  Shaw won by decision in the fourth round, 5-1, against West Hancock’s Jordan Wei-
