Cardinals end week on an upswing; pick up two wins

The week may have started off a little shaky for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team, but it ended on an upswing, as the Cardinals collected two wins and moved their record to 4-13.

Algona 14, GHV 0
GHV hosted Algona on Tuesday, June 17, where the Bulldogs shut out the Cardinals, 14-0.
The Cards only managed four hits, compared to Algona’s 14. 

 Jake Wolf was the losing pitcher for GHV. He gave up eight hits and six runs. Spencer Shaw and Cory Boeckman also saw time on the mound. Shaw had one strike-out, gave up two hits and three runs, while Boeckman gave up four hits and five runs.
The Cardinals just couldn’t manage a hit against Cameron Lahndorf, who struck out eight batters.
GHV’s Josh Theobald seemed to be the only Cardinal who didn’t have trouble hitting off Lahndorf. He collected two of GHV’s four hits. Alek Goll and Cade Baker were the other Cardinals to connect for a hit.
Baker and Theobald each had one stolen base.

GHV 9, North Iowa 2
It was a better night for the Cardinals when they traveled to North Iowa on Wednesday, June 18.
GHV’s bats were hot after the slump on Tuesday. The Cards connected on 12 hits, while allowing North Iowa only three.
Theobald was on the mound for the Cardinals and recorded the win. He threw a whopping 10 strikeouts, walked only one and gave up three hits.
GHV recorded five runs in the third inning and four in the seventh inning for the 9-2 win.
Theobald, Cade Baker and Payton James had the hottest bats for the Cards, collecting three hits apiece. One of Baker’s hits was a triple and Theobald hit one double. Alek Goll recorded two hits, while Harley Forry connected on one hit.
Theobald and James led the team in RBIs and stolen bases. James recorded three RBIs, while Theobald had two. They both had two stolen bases.

GHV 10, West Hancock 0 (5)
The Cardinals recorded a 10-0 five inning shutout against West Hancock at home on Friday, June 20.
GHV started slow in the first inning, recording only one run. Things got rolling in the second and third innings, as the Cardinals collected five and four runs respectively in each inning.
The Eagles only managed two hits off GHV pitcher Spencer Shaw. Shaw recorded six strike-outs and only gave up two hits.
A highlight of the night, and possibly the whole season, was Braeden Meints’ bases loaded home run.
Josh Theobald also had a good night on offense, recording three hits and three runs for the Cardinals. Alex Goll had two hits and two RBIs, while Jim Ermer also had two hits, two RBIs and recorded two runs.
