Cardinals drop four games; move to 2-8 on the season

 The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team dropped four games in action last week, moving their record to 2-8 on the season.

GHV 7, West Hancock 2
 It was a good night on the road for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team on Monday, June 2. The Cardinals topped West Hancock, 7-2, in a conference show-down.

 GHV scored two runs in the first inning, but didn’t score again until the fifth inning. The Cards scored two runs in the fifth and three in the seventh for the 7-2 victory.
Josh Theobald was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals and pitched the entire game. He struck out 10 batters, walked four and gave up six hits.
Leading GHV’s offense was Alek Goll. Goll had two singles, scored one run and had two RBIs.
Harley Forry and Spencer Shaw each scored two runs, while Luke Wolf and Cory Boeckman each scored one run.
Braden Meints, Payton James and Cade Baker all hit doubles, while Jake Wolf had a single.
Theobald and Jake Wolf each had two RBIs. Holden Hutcheson recorded one RBI.

West Bend Mallard 8, GHV 2
The Cardinals were getting the hits against West Bend Mallard, they just weren’t getting across the plate.  GHV had eight hits in the game, but could only manage two runs, as the Cardinals fell to the Wolverines, 8-2, on Wednesday, June 4.
GHV held a slight 2-1 lead until the fifth inning, when WBM scored five runs.  The Cards were held scoreless the remainder of the game and the Wolverines scored two more runs in the seventh for the final score.
Spencer Shaw took the loss on the mound.  He struck out four, walked one, gave up six hits and allowed four runs.  Payton James, Jake Wolf and Luke Wolf also saw time on the mound.
Josh Theobald and Cory Boeckman were the only players to score for the Cards.  Shaw and Braden Meints helped their effort with an RBI apiece.
Shaw, Meints and Jim Ermer all had two hits apiece, while Theobald and Boeckman had one hit each.  Shaw and Theobald each hit a double.

Newman 6, GHV 0
The Newman Knights recorded a 6-0 shut-out against GHV on Friday night, June 6.
Although the Cardinals collected more hits than the Knights, Newman was able to convert their hits into runs. GHV had seven hits, while Newman had five.
Payton James took the loss for the Cardinals. He gave up five hits, walked six and had four strike-outs. Jake Wolf and Luke Wolf also saw time on the mound.
Newman’s Jack Fitzgerald had a stellar night, striking out 11 batters and walking none.
Braden Meints and Cade Baker each had two hits. One of Baker’s hits was a double. Spencer Shaw, Jake Wolf and Cory Boeckman each had a single.

Garner Tournament
The Cardinals hosted a tournament on Saturday, June 7. GHV dropped two games to Northwood-Kensett and St. Ansgar.
It was a tight game against Northwood-Kensett. The game opened with the Vikings scoring five runs in the first inning, while the Cardinals scored three. The scoring flipped in the second inning with GHV scoring five runs to N-K’s two, for a 8-7 Cardinal lead. The Vikings went on to score one run in the fourth and sixth innings, while the Cards were held scoreless the remainder of the game.
