Cardinal ground game pulverizes Green Devils

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals’ (2-4, 1-2), run game steamrolled the Osage Green Devils (1-5, 1-3), on its way to a 42-6 win in Class 2A District 2 action. The Cardinals did what they do best as 441 rushing yards were tallied Friday night.

“We played a very good game,” said Head Coach Scott VanDusseldorp. “Our offensive line did a fantastic job sustaining blocks.”
The game began slow with a series of turnover on downs until the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals then found a seam that lead to the end zone on a 32-yard Conner Shaw run. The PAT was good.
More of the same prevailed in the second quarter, as a battle for field position was won by the Cardinals. Harley Forry scored on a 15-yard run, putting GHV up by 14. But the Green Devils weren’t ready to give up yet and mustered a final drive and trudged into the end zone making the halftime score 14-6.
Defensive adjustments after halftime and a few critical stops kept the third quarter largely scoreless until the end. Shaw found the seam once again to run his way into the end zone on a 67-yard jailbreak.
The fourth quarter was one of obliteration for one side and despair for the other. The Cardinals got into their groove and by the end, the Green Devils gave up trying to find theirs. The Cardinals put up 21 more points. Shaw scored two of the fourth quarter TDs, while Corey Hauptmann scored the final GHV touchdown on a 32-yard run, bringing the final score to 42-6.
The Cardinals’ offense was lead by Shaw with 229-yards on 31 carries and four touchdowns. Also contributing was Forry with 144-yards on 10 carries and a touchdown, Colby Reid with 34-yards on 11 carries and Hauptmann with one carry for 32-yards and a touchdown.
Lucas Prohaska was two for two on passing attempts for 36-yards, throwing to Forry and Ben Baumgard for 26 and 10 yards, respectively.
Connor Burke was perfect on his PAT kicking, drilling all six.
The Green Devils were lead on offense by Ben Mallinger with 48-yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Collin Havel had 13 attempts for 20-yards.
Kyle Berg passed for 31-yards on four of 13 passing. His primary receiver was Thatcher Goodale with two catches for 18-yards.
“Defensively I am very pleased with where we are at,” said VanDusseldorp. “We still have things to work on, but things are going in the right direction.”
The Cardinals’ defense was led by Reid with eight tackles. Also - Read More Via e-Edition
