Cardinal girls take conference track title by a large margin
It was a very successful night for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team as they captured the North Iowa Conference Meet title on Tuesday, May 12. The Cardinals won by a large margin with 144 points. West Hancock was a distant second with 100 points.
The Cards really got things rolling in the field events, with three first place finishes and one second. Taylor Vosburg won the high jump with a jump of 5’1”. Emily Mathews won the long jump with a leap of 15’2”. Dasiana Larson picked up a first in the shot put with a throw of 43’5” and second in the discus with a toss of 117’01”.
Mathews collected two more individual first place finishes. She won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.69. She also won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.04.
Maddie Tusha was also an individual leader, winning the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.54.
Tiara Van Gerpen placed second in the 100 meter dash with at time of 13.81. She picked up a bronze medal in the 800 meter run in 2:33.52.
Rebekah Larson was second in the 3000 meter run with a time of 13:02.10.
The Cardinal relay teams also saw quite a bit of success. The 4x100 team and the sprint medley team won their races. The 4x100 team of Sola Stephenson, Tusha, Taylor Vossberg and Mackenzie Van Gerpen ran the race in 53.06. The sprint medley team of Tiara Van Gerpen, Mackenzie Van Gerpen, Vossberg and Tusha finished with a time of 1:55.31.
The shuttle hurdle team placed second with a time of 1:11.42. Members of the relay included Stacy Hackenmiller, Miranda Jackson, Sola Stephenson and Emily Mathews.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Tiara Van Gerpen, Stephenson, Mathews and Tusha was third with a time of 4:25.74.
