Busy week of action for Clear Lake wrestlers
Kellogg, Bieber named to All-Tournament team
The Clear Lake wrestling team had an extremely busy week, with seven dual meets. The Lions came away with wins over Iowa Falls and Emmetsburg. During the stretch, the Lions lost to four teams ranked in the top 10 in state.
“We are a pretty decent wrestling team. Emmetsburg was 7-5 coming into Saturday and we beat them. We just have a very
tough schedule which makes it appear that we are down this year when in all actuality, we are a pretty good team,” said Coach Gary Weber. “Last Tuesday, Denver came in as the number one ranked team in the state and Charles City beat them. We lost to both teams, but competed well at most weights. Thursday we wrestled very well, beating Iowa Falls, 57-18. Saturday matched us up against two more top 10 teams in Osage and Kasson-Mantorville, who is ranked number four in Minnesota. Those two meets were tough, but it shows what our guys need to work on to compete with the best and that is what our staff is looking for. We want to get kids to the state tournament every year. That is why we have a non conference schedule with ranked teams like Ankeny, Mason City, Denver, Charles City and Spirit Lake on our schedule. We could soften our schedule and get more wins, but that is not what we are after.”
Kasson-Mantorville won the quadrangular with a 4-0 record. Osage finished 3-1, Independence was 2-2, Clear Lake 1-3 and Emmetsburg 0-4.
Here are wrestler-by-wrestler results provided by the coach for the week:
106: Ryan Schmalen. Ryan had three ranked wrestlers this week and learned a lot. He had nice wins against his Iowa Falls and Independence opponents.
113: Brennen Doebel. Amazingly, Brennen is giving up 25 pounds and went 4-3 this week. That is absolutely amazing to me and we are very proud of him.
120: Matt Bieber. Matt went 7-0 this week and is really peaking at the right time. He beat a top 10 ranked kid from Independence which is a real feather in his hat.
126: Blake Kelso. Blake ran into some tough competition this week, but he battled hard and came away with some nice wins.
132: Carson Farmer. Carson has his intensity back and is wrestling hard again which is translating into success.
138: Jacob Baker. Jacob is doing everything we ask and is improving his technique and had a big win against Iowa Falls.
145: Aaron Boeshart. Aaron also wrestled very well - Read More Via e-Edition
