Bernice Truesdell
Bernice M. Truesdell, 95, of Ventura died Jan. 5, 2012 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, May 26, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Family will greet friends one hour before the service.
Bernice was born in Dickens, Iowa on Nov. 21, 1916, the daughter of Dewey and Pearl (Barringer) Culver. During her school years she was an outstanding athlete, graduating from Dickens High school in 1934. After a trip to the west coast she attended a business school in St. Cloud, Minn. On Sept. 21, 1935 she married Frank Truesdell, at that time a teacher at Zion, Iowa. Their son, Bill, was born in 1938, and in 1942 the family moved to Woden, Iowa where Frank was superintendent of schools. Bernice worked part- time at the Woden Post Office. They moved to Hayfield, Iowa in 1948 where Bernice shared the head cook job at Hayfield Consolidated Schools. In 1957 they moved to Gilmore City, Iowa, then Galva, Iowa in 1963 and Rembrandt, Iowa in 1964. Frank retired at Rembrandt in 1977 and they moved to Ventura.
Bernice enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, and gardening, but her great love and enjoyment was her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and going to all their sports events.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ventura, and the Ventura Garden Club. Bridge was fun, but most of her time was spent with her many flowers, sewing (she made most of her clothes), and preparing and cooking garden fruits and vegetables and the game and fish that Frank would bring home. Grandma Bernice always had pickled fish, home baked bars, homemade frozen fruit, homemade cookies, and a variety of cooked meat. She knew the names of most of the Cubs, Twins, and Braves in the 50’s and 60”s, and went to several Twins, Cubs, and Braves games.
Left to cherish her memories are son, Bill (Laura) Truesdell, of Clear Lake; grandson, Randy (Kathy) Truesdell, of Clear Lake; granddaughters, Stefanie (Mark) Camenisch of Boone, Iowa, Peggy Adams of Urbandale, Iowa, and Paula Lindsley of Marengo, Ill.; and great-grandchildren, Tanner and Parker Truesdell, Bailey and Macie Camenisch, Paige and Spencer Lindsley, and Aubrianna Adams.
She was preceded in death by her parents; twin brother, Bernard; brother, Gerald; sisters, Thelma Leighter, Dorothy Brenda and Cleo Watson and her husband, Frank Truesdell.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
