Marcella May Thomas, 96, Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013 at the Oakwood Care Center.

Per Marcella’s wishes, cremation rites have accorded and a graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with Pastor Ed Bard officiating.  Memorials may be given to Marcella Thomas Memorial Fund, c/o Signe Elliott, 13413 Lillian St., Omaha, NE 68138.

Marjorie Miller

 

Marjorie Ellen Miller, 83, 1616 N. 8th Pl., Clear Lake, died Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with Rev. Dean Hess officiating.  Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake.  Memorials may be given to the Marjorie E. Miller Memorial Fund.

Eagle Grove to leave North Central Conference

 

A second member of the North Central Conference has announced it will be leaving the league, beginning with the 2014-15 school year.

Last week Eagle Grove voted 3-2 to become a member of the North Iowa Conference.  They join Bishop Garrigan as NCC teams moving to the NIC.  Pending Eagle Grove’s move to the NIC, the North Central Conference would have eight members.

Ouverson signs to play volleyball at NIACC

 

Clear Lake’s Carly Ouverson has signed on to play volleyball for North Iowa Area Community College in the fall.  

Ouverson, named to the North Central Conference elite volleyball team following her senior season, was a master at setting up the Lion offense.  She recorded an amazing 550 

G-H/V boys track team opens 2013 season at Buena Vista indoor meet

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys track team opened the 2013 season with an indoor meet at Buena Vista College at Storm Lake on Saturday, March 16.

“Although it was along day, this was the perfect meet for us.  We were finally on a track, hurdling over real hurdles, and competing in field events,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.  “Handoffs looked great for early in the season and we saw some great things from athletes.  Today only increased our excitement for the upcoming season.”

Calaguas to perform in Albert Lea Figure Skating show

 

Alexa Calaguas, a senior at Clear Lake High School, will perform a solo at the Albert Lea Figure Skating Club’s 52nd annual show March 23-24. The show, “Planes, Trains and Blades,” will take place at the Albert Lea City Arena.

CLHS speech students compete

 

Eleven CLHS speech students traveled to Mason City Newman High School on Feb. 23,  to participate in the Individual District Speech Competition.  Students who received Division “I” ratings and advanced to the State Competition included:  Amie Adams,

Winds whip up a mess

Weather delays water tower demo

Demolition work on the city’s downtown water tower was delayed this week due to weather.

Isler Demolition, of Michigan, had planned to begin work dismantling the vintage 1949 water tower this week, however forecasts for snow, ice and high winds caused the company to revise its schedule.  

Court upholds Board’s decision for school use

After three years court ruling is final, but school district has moved on

 

The City of Clear Lake’s Board of Adjustment acted properly in granting a conditional use permit to locate a counseling service for youth in the former Sunset School building.  That was the ruling of the Iowa Court of Appeals last week.

The ruling put an end to a nearly three-year battle about future uses for the school building.
