Track team competes in Dickinson Relays

 

Selected members of the Clear Lake boys track team got their season started Tuesday, March 19, competing in the Dickinson Relays in the UNI Dome at Cedar Falls.

Hamilton to play in Iowa Shrine All-Star football game

 

Clear Lake High School football standout Bryson Hamilton will be playing in the 2013 Iowa Shrine All-Star football game July 27 at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls.

The goal of the Iowa Shrine All-Star football game is to raise money to benefit Shriners’ hospitals for Children.  Their motto is “Stong legs run, so weak legs may walk.”

Three area athletes compete for NIACC at Grand View Relays

 

The NIACC men’s and women’s track teams opened their outdoor season on Saturday, March 23, at the Grand View Relays. 

Three former Clear Lake High School athletes are competing for NIACC this season and ran at the Grand View Relays. Nicholas DiMarco ran the 10,000, while Stephanie Faught ran the 1,500 and Rebecca Baker competed in the 5,000.  Faught also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay.

The men picked up three first place finishes at the Grand View Viking Relays.  The women captured one first place finish.

Legislative update

Cargill grant lets CL students explore engineering

 

Clear Lake sixth graders can consider themselves cutting edge scientists.

Thanks to a $21,000 grant from Cargill, Incorporated the students are exploring robotics.

School Board settles on calendar

 

Parents can plan on weekly early dismissals

 

The Clear Lake School Board approved a school calendar Monday night which includes a 2 p.m. dismissal each Wednesday during the 2013-14 school year.  The early dismissal provides time for state-required teacher in-service time.

Council gives unanimous OK to sidewalk, storm sewer project

 

 

Noting it was not an easy decision, four City Council members unanimously adopted a resolution of necessity to proceed with a storm sewer and sidewalk project involving South 20th Street, 1st and 2nd Avenue South.

Four residents of the neighborhood addressed the Council during a public hearing held March 18. The citizens, who all own property in the project area, primarily objected to the city’s plan for five-foot wide sidewalks, rather than constructing four-foot walkways.  

Students organize, contribute to blood drive

 

On Wednesday, March 20, Clear Lake High School held its 16th blood drive in the high school gym.  Students from the Human Anatomy and Physiology II class were in charge of the planning, promotion and implementation of the drive.  Seventy-four students and teachers were able to donate 59 units through the Life Serve Blood Center of Iowa.

School district signs on with energy service

 

The Clear Lake School Board voted to sign an agreement with U.S. Energy Services, Inc., in an effort to save an estimated $6,000 yearly in energy costs.

Marcella Thomas

 

Marcella May Thomas, 96, Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013 at the Oakwood Care Center.

Per Marcella’s wishes, cremation rites have accorded and a graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with Pastor Ed Bard officiating.  Memorials may be given to Marcella Thomas Memorial Fund, c/o Signe Elliott, 13413 Lillian St., Omaha, NE 68138.
