GHV Cardinals place fifth at N-P Tournament

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team placed fifth at the Nashua Plainfield Tournament held on Saturday, Dec. 14.  GHV scored 123 points in the 12-team tournament.  Clarksville won the event with 232.5 points, followed by Nashua Plainfield with 228 points.

“I am very proud of how we wrestled today,” said Coach Steve Smith.  “Placing fifth felt good because we are able to compete with other teams this year.”

Lion grapplers win Webster City Tournament

The Clear Lake wrestling team went 4-1 and won the Webster City Dual Tournament Saturday, topping some large schools in the process.

“To beat Ankeny, 51-10, and Waterloo West, 49-25, is a real credit to our kids,” said Coach Gary Weber.  “We also beat a very good Webster City team, 33-23.   What I was most impressed with as a coach was all of our kids moving up a weight class to help the team win duals. They are very unselfish and team orientated, which is a real pleasure to coach.”

Cards crush competition

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls basketball team (3-2) picked up two wins in the North Iowa Conference by topping West Hancock and Belmond-Klemme last week.  

GHV 66, West Hancock 30

Patience and execution on offense led girls to a big win over West Hancock (0-1, 1-4) on Tuesday, Dec. 10.  The Cardinals, who shot 47 percent from the field, had no problem with the Eagles in the 66-30 romp.

North Iowa child inspires Polar Bear participants

About 550 persons braved extremely cold temperatures and participated in a Polar Bear plunge into Clear Lake as part of Christmas By The Lake activities.

Enrollment dips at CL schools

Enrollment in the Clear Lake School District slipped 26.64 students in 2013-14, reports Superintendent Anita Micich.

The school leader shared enrollment numbers with the School Board during a November work session.  The current certified enrollment for 2013-2014,  as of Oct. 1, is 1,236.70, she reported. 

“We are down 26.65 students, however our open enrollment numbers are down 34.50 and we graduated a large class last year so this was anticipated,” said Micich.

Giving Tree need continues in final week

Great progress has been made, but 20 ornaments remain on the Giving Tree during its final week on display in the Mirror-Reporter office, 12 N. 4th St.

Chamber announces parade winners

An entry from Friends of 457 was declared the winner in Saturday night’s Christmas By The Lake Lighted Parade.  The volunteer organization, which is dedicated to the preservation of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad steam locomotive in

 East Park in Mason City, was awarded $300 in Clear Lake Chamber Bucks.  Second place and $150 went to the Surf Ballroom, while third place and $75 was awarded to Dickes Dry Wall.

Marion Roth

Marion Roth, age 97, of Menno, S.D., passed away early Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, surrounded by her family.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 at the Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, with Rev. Theresa Jacobson officiating.  Burial was in the Unity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Clayton, S.D.  

Pallbearers were her great-grandsons, Trent Chance, Cameron VanBeek, and Jaron VanBeek; her grandsons-in-law, Kevin VanBeek, Brian Mckinney; and nephew, Warren Mitchell.

Margaret Simmer

Margaret Simmer, 97, Clear Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with Bob Orr officiating.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 - 7 p.m.  and then one hour before the 

service on Thursday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.  Family suggests memorials to the Margaret Simmer memorial fund.
