James L. Cox

  James LeRoy Cox, age 72, died Nov. 30, 2013 after suffering a stroke at his home in Redstone, Colo.  Jim was born Jan. 19, 1941 in Rockwell, Iowa, to Cecil (Kid) and Emma Cox.  

A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at the Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Glenwwood Springs, Colo., on Dec. 21, 2013.  Jim was cremated and the family will spread his ashes in Redstone.  Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army.

Gerald Alan “Gerry” Wass, age 60, of Denver, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa, after a courageous battle against prostate cancer.

One township fails to return new contract

Fire protection services remain up in the air for a portion of one township served by the soon-to-be disbanded Ventura Protective Association.

According to VPA Fire Chief and Ventura City Council member John Quintus, the Dec. 10 deadline given to townships served by the VPA has passed without a signed contract from the Clear Lake Township for fire protection services with 

Community Kitchen location changing

The Clear Lake Community Kitchen serves a hot meal each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.  Mondays and Fridays the meal is served in the Fellowship Hall at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St.  The Wednesday meal has been served for the past years at the Clear Lake Senior Citizens Center.

The City of Clear Lake will purchase three dilapidated properties on South 3rd Street to clear the way for redevelopment.

Lions remain perfect

The Clear Lake boys basketball team, ranked fifth in Class 3A, rolled past a pair of North Central Conference teams last week.  The Lions are now 4-0 overall and in the conference and will travel to Eagle Grove for a Friday, Dec. 20, game before the holiday break.

A win and a loss for GHV

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys split a pair of conference games last week, moving their record to 3-2.

GHV 87, West Hancock 61

It was a successful night on the home court for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys basketball team Tuesday, Dec. 10.  Not only did the Cardinals beat West Hancock, they also set a new school record by making 37 free throws.

Ranked CL girls roll

The Clear Lake girls continue to climb in the rankings on the strength of two more impressive wins last week. The 4-1 Lions, ranked seventh in Class 3A, will be on the road to Eagle Grove Friday for their final game before the holiday break.
