Darreld Petersen, Sr.

     Darreld Floyd Petersen, Sr, 81, Meservey, Iowa and formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday, April 6, 2012, in Meservey, surrounded by his family.
    A celebration of Darreld’s life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, with Reverend Rose Marie Calderon-Khan officiating.  Inurnment will be held in the Meservey Cemetery with military honors conducted by members of the Clear Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake.  Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.
    The family would like to suggest that those wishing to give a memorial to consider contributions be made to the Wright County Hospice or to the Darreld Petersen memorial fund in his memory.
    Darreld Floyd Petersen, Sr, was born on Feb. 27, 1931, in Swea City, Iowa, the son of Orie Clifford and Dorothy Beatrice (Bonnette) Petersen.  Darreld received his education in the Burt Community School.  He was united in marriage to Zelma Mary Schnebly on Sept. 12, 1949, in Algona, Iowa.  Zelma preceded him in death on Feb. 9, 2007.  Darreld was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 2, 1948, in Algona, and served his country honorably and faithfully during the Korean conflict until his honorable discharge on Jan. 8, 1952, at Ft. Knox, Ken.  Darreld and his family lived around the Algona area, before moving to Clear Lake.  Darreld worked for over 33 years for Wayne Feeds in Mason City, and also farmed south of Clear Lake.  Darreld designed and built for his own families dock business, the first dock barge in Clear Lake that was named the Green Dolphin.
    Darreld enjoyed gardening, reading, bowling, stock car racing, was a avid fan of Dr. Robert Schuler, “an eagle” at the Crystal Cathedral, loved to winter at the Snow to Sun Trailer Park in Weslaco, Texas, playing Hand and Foot Card game, and Dominoes, but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his family and grandchildren.   
    He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, and the Men’s Garden Club in Clear Lake.
    Those left to cherish his memory, are his children, Darreld “Buzz” (Beverly) Petersen, Jr, of Clear Lake, Clifford (Mary) Petersen of Clear Lake, William “Surf” (Margaret) Petersen of Clear Lake, and Zelene (Mark) Schilling of Meservey; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Orie “Bud” (Irene) Petersen of Algona, Jerry (Kay) Petersen of Waukee, Robert (Joice) Petersen of Algona, Rose (Gary) Fokken of Rodman, Betty (Bill) Johnson of Algona, and Sharon Fagan of Madrid; his sister-in-law, Joice Petersen of Algona; his aunt, Arleta Bunkosski-Burlingame of Algona; as well as many nieces, nephews, and many other extended family members and friends. 
    Darreld was preceded in death by his parents, Orie and Dorothy Petersen; his wife, Zelma; grandson, Joey C. Petersen in 1981; daughter-in-law, Diane Petersen in 2002; his two brothers and sister-in-law, Harold (Vivian) Petersen, and Donald Petersen; and his sister and brother-in-law, Sandy (Ed) Dehler, and brother-in-law, Ralph Fagan.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.
