CL and GHV compete in Regional Golf Meet
It was a cold and blustery day for a Regional Golf Meet, but the Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls put the brutal conditions behind them and gave it their all. The Region 1B tournament was played on Monday, May 18, at Clarmond Country Club in Clarion.
Clarion-Goldfield/Dows won the meet with a score of 368. GHV followed with a 391 and Clear Lake was third, carding a 433. CGD and GHV will advance to play in the Regional Final Golf Meet in Pocahontas on Tuesday, May 26.
“We knew going in that Clarion would easily win on their home course,” said GHV Coach Todd Greiman. “We also knew it would be either Clear Lake or us moving on as runner-up. With the state’s best 3A golfer (Emily Snelling) playing for the Lions, the girls realized that they’d all need to play well to overcome the scoring edge she’d give their team. Their ability to play through the bad weather allowed them to do that.”
Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling didn’t disappoint in her role as the state’s leading 3A golfer. Snelling carded a 78 to earn the medalist honor. GHV’s Bailee Frayne also made the top five with her score of 91, good for fourth place. Both girls will advance as individuals to the Regional Final.
“Everyday I get comments about how Emily is out practicing every morning at 6:30 a.m. and out every night until dark,” said Clear Lake Coach Adam Brinkman. “She loves the game of golf and works extremely hard at it. All the hard work is definitely paying off for her.”
The Cardinals really pulled everything together for the Regional Meet, with four of their golfers placing in the top 10. Madee Hejna was sixth with her score of 96, while Kyleigh Slaichert was eighth with a 99 and Elly Johnston was 10th with a score of 105. Rachel Enright and Paige Penning tied for 24th place with scores of 121.
For Clear Lake, Rebecca Long and Maddy Hartnett were within three strokes of each other. Long carded a 111, good for 14th place, and Hartnett recorded a 114, placing her 17th. Jordyn Barragy rounded off Clear Lake’s score with a 130. Also golfing for Clear Lake was Carson Frahm with a 132 and Peyton Huey ended with a 139.
The GHV team and Snelling will compete in the Regional Final Golf Meet to be held on Tuesday, May 26.
