Cardinals fall to tough competition
It was a rough week for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team. The Cardinals dropped two games to tough competition.
Webster City 4, GHV 1
It was a young, inexperienced Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team that took the field last week against a good Webster City team.
“At one time during the match we had five freshmen and two sophomores on the field,” said Coach Eric Williams. “The first half we played a little sloppy and you could see our inexperience, but they got their feet wet in the second half and settled down.”
Despite giving it their all, the Cardinals fell to the Lynx, 4-1.
Connor Burke scored GHV’s lone goal, assisted by Dalton Basinger.
Basinger took two shots, while Jack Bertilson and Turner Albertson had one shot apiece.
Patrick Terhark had two shots on goal, while Colton Schroeder, Basinger, Burke, Albertson, Bertilson and Ryan Meyers had one shot on goal apiece.
The Cardinals were also playing without their starting goalie. Chase Theobald stepped in and did fine job, recording 15 saves.
Humboldt 3, GHV 1
Despite having plenty of chances, the Cardinals dropped a 3-1 game to Humboldt on Friday night, May 15.
“We are starting to apply the things we’ve been working on in practice, but it looked like we were all a little off,” said Assistant Coach Chipper Fyfe. “Humboldt out worked us in the midfield and controlled more of the game.”
Dalton Basinger supplied the assist, which allowed Turner Albertson to score GHV’s goal.
Chase Theobald managed the goalie duties, with Albertson also providing some time in the goalie position. Theobald had two saves for the night and Albertson had one. All three of Humboldt’s goals were scored against Theobald.
Connor Burke had two shots on goal, while Basinger, Ryan Meyers and Colton Schroeder had one apiece.
