Marvin Lunbeck
Marvin H. Lunbeck, 92, of Clear Lake, passed away peacefully after a brief illness Monday, May 18, 2015, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2015, with the Rev. Ed Bard Chaplin, of Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Burial will take place at a later time in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to Marvin H. Lunbeck memorial fund.
Marvin was born Dec. 29, 1922 in Malta Bend, Mo., the son of Robert Homer and Ruth (Spry) Lunbeck.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp at the age of 17 and served in World War II at Guadalcanal. He was a member of Horse Marine Cadence.
While on leave in San Diego he met the love of his life and later married Mearle A. Holland on Jan. 10, 1947, in Kansas City, Mo.
In 1955 they moved to Clear Lake from Ames, Iowa. He worked as an iron worker and built fire escapes in the Clear Lake and Mason City area. He later owned and operated Lunbeck’s Welding for over 20 years in Ventura, Iowa.
His passion in life was fishing and enjoying the many hours he spent on Clear Lake and in Texas. He organized many fishing groups in Texas and was known as “Marv’s Fish Fry” in Texas. He was a member of Clear Lake V.F.W., American Legion, and Clear Lake Fishing Club, where he was president for six years.
He is survived by three daughters, Sandra ( Dick) Dillavou, Clear Lake, Deborah (Alan) Swift, Hayden, Idaho, and Marvel (Marvin) Flatness, Lanesboro, Minn.; six grandchildren, Dawn (Todd) Mennenga, Chris (Autumn) Dillavou, Margo Cavanaugh, Melissa (Scott) Smith, McKenzy Flatness and Morgan Flatness; 10 great-grandchildren, Dalton and Danielle Mennenga, Mariah, Austin and Kori Dillavou, Paige and Ben Crabb, Tyler Sheahan, Lilly DeVisser and Blake Olson; and one sister, Dolly (James) Kiser, Malta Bend, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Reuben Baril, Littleton, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mearle; a sister, Doris Baril; and a granddaughter, Tamala Sue Dillavou.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
