Jones cleaning up in field events

Don Hoeppel Relays

Lexi Jones earned a pair of first place finishes and Tali Tesar had one for the Clear Lake girls at the Don Hoeppel Relays held Monday, May 4, at Garner.  The Lions finished sixth in the eight-team field with 60 points.  Osage won with 160 points, followed by Hampton-Dumot with 84 and Northwood-Kensett with 79.

Jones picked up her wins in the field events.  She cleared 5’3” in the high jump and won the long jump with a mark of 15’ 11”.  Tesar was victorious in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:12.64.

The Lions’ 4x200 relay with McKenna Backhaus, Jones, Molly Dugan and Megan Merfeld finished second in a time of 1:53.06.

Other placewinners for the Lions included:

•100: Backhaus, third, 13.38; Jones, sixth, 13.87

•200: Dugan, fourth, 28.34

•800: Emilie Jandebeur, fifth, 2:43.68

•4x100: Michaela Niles, Jandebeur, Aspen Curtis, Merfeld, sixth, 56.67

•Shuttle hurdle: Curtis, Kayla Ritter, Niles, Tesar, third, 1:14.82

Jim Ahrens Relays

Stormy weather shortened the Jim Ahrens Relays Friday in Clear Lake, but not before Saint Ansgar pulled away from the eight-team field with 130 points.  Forest City and Hampton-DUmont followed with 84 and 71 points.  West Fork and the Lions were next with 70 and 63 points respectively.  Lake Mills (51), GHV (40) and Belmond-Klemme (16) rounded out the field.

Lexi Jones was a double winner in the field events.  She cleared 5’ to win the high jump and had a mark of 14’ 11” in the long jump.  She was also a member of the winning 4x200 relay along with Molly Dugan, McKenna Backhaus and Megan Merfeld. The group ran a 1:53.99.

Backhaus also earned a second place finish in the 100 meter dash, running a 13.53.
