GHV boys wins home meet
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys track team had a week of ups and downs. After placing first at their home track meet, the Cardinals finished third in the Adam Sundall Relays held at Bishop Garrigan.
GHV Meet
It was a fun victory lap for the GHV boys track team. They circled their home oval after winning the 2015 Don Hoppel Co-ed Relays on Monday, May 4. GHV took top honors in the nine-team field with 122 points, followed by Clear Lake with 105. Forest City was third with 90 points.
“We’ve talked to the boys all season about competing and how you’re always trying to earn team points,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “They believe in each other and it’s been a really enjoyable season.”
Sam Cataldo led the team with two first place finishes, one second place finish and two third place finishes. He was first in the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 15.80, and first in the 400 meter hurdles, with a time of 58.42. He anchored the second place shuttle hurdle team with a time of 1:01.74. Other members of the relay were Conner Shaw, David Cook and JJ Loschen.
Other first place finishes went to Ezra Marroquin in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.46. Chase Smith ran the 3200 meter run in 10:33.22 and Logan Dalbeck was first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:49.25.
Marroquin placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.46. Johnny O’Connor placed second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.40.

Bishop Garrigan Meet
They weren’t their usual stellar selves on Thursday, May 7, when the GHV boys track team took third in the Adam Sundall Relays held at Bishop Garrigan. Algona topped the four-team field with 215 points, followed by Bishop Garrigan with 102 and GHV with 91 team points, who was the fourth place team.
The Cardinals took four first place finishes. Ezra Marroquin was first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.00. Sam Cataldo won the 110 meter hurdles in 15.55. Chase Smith came in first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:44.11. The 4x100 meter relay, consisting of Marroquin, David Cook, Kevin Boehnke and Conner Shaw, won the race in 45.97.
Shaw was second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.43.
