GHV girls win home quadrangular

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls golf team picked up two wins and dropped one dual meet in action this week.

Eagle Grove 213, GHV 218

On Monday, April 27, the girls had a rough night and came up four strokes short as they lost to Eagle Grove. The Eagles finished with 213, while the Cardinals had 218.

“Once again our inability to quickly adapt to unfamiliar greens proved to be very costly,” said Coach Todd Greiman.  “It was a disappointing performance for all of us.  Each girl came in four to six strokes higher than I had anticipated.  The Eagle Grove course is one where local knowledge is critical.”

Bailee Frayne was the meet medalist with a 47.  Also scoring for the Cardinals was Kyleigh Slaicher, 54, Madee Hejna, 56, Rachel Enright, 61, Elly Johnston, 61 and Kayla Leerar, 69.

GHV 192, B-G 213

Tuesday night was much better for the Cards, when they played on their familiar home course.

Frayne was again the meet medalist with a 41.  Slaichert was one stroke behind her and finished as runner-up with a 42.

Other scores were Hejna with a 53, Enright finished with a 56, Johnston carded a 61 and Paige Penning wrapped it up with a 65.

“This was the third time of the season where we scored 192 on our home course,” said Greiman.  “All of the girls played well and seemed comfortable on the familiar greens.”

GHV won the meet with a 192.  Bishop Garrigan carded a 213.

GHV 201, North Iowa 260

Frayne again led the way for the Cardinals by recording her third meet top finish of the week. She won the North Iowa meet on Thursday with her score of 47.

North Iowa was 59 strokes away from GHV with a 260.  The Cards finished with a 201.

Hejna also had a good meet, finishing as runner-up with a 48.  Slaichert was right behind her with a 49, followed by Enright with a 57, Johnston had a 64 and Penning carded a 67.

“It took the girls a while to adjust to different greens, but they were eventually able to adapt.  It was good to see us put up some competitive scores on an unfamiliar course.

GHV Quadrangular

The Cardinal girls had a fantastic night on Friday, May 1, when they hosted Newman, St. Ansgar and Forest City in a quadrangular.  GHV blew the competition out of the water with a season low score of 187.  Newman was 22 strokes behind with a 209 for runner-up honors.  St. Ansgar finished with a 236 and Forest City shot a 245.

Frayne is hard to beat and she was again meet medalist with a 38.  Slaichert also shot well to earn runner-up honors with a 44.

“It was great to see Bailee get back into the 30’s and Kyleigh also played a solid round,” said Greiman.  “Madee and Rachel each had one hole that bit them, but overall played the remaining eight holes well.”

Hejna finished with a 50 and Enright carded a 55.  Also golfing was Penning, who ended with a 59, and Leerar shot a 63.
