Cards do well at Sectionals; Shaw wins at 160

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura wrestling team is moving in the right direction after a good showing at the 2A Sectionals held in Hampton on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The Cardinals have five wrestlers that will be moving on in the hopes of a chance at a State title. Connor Shaw was the lone wrestler to claim a Sectional championship.  Shaw avenged a loss from earlier in the season to earn the 160-pound title.  Claiming runner-up honors were Austin Case at 106-pounds, Andrew Dornbier at 120-pounds, Cade Baker at 170-pounds and Connor Smith at 195-pounds.

“Conner Shaw wrestled well in the finals match to avenge a loss.  Austin, Andrew, Cade and Connor Smith all had great days too,” said Coach Steve Smith.  “We are moving in the right direction for the program.”

Clear Lake won the tournament with 221 points, followed by Iowa Falls-Alden with 167.5.  GHV was fifth with 151 points.

“It really helps having a great coaching staff,” said Smith.  “A lot of credit needs to go to Cory Jenniges, Travis Dodd and Eric Jackson.”
