Golf team advances with an ugly win
It wasn’t pretty, but the Clear Lake boys golf team got the job done.
Despite playing their worst 18-hole tournament of the year, the Lions were good enough to advance in post-season play on Friday at Decorah.
“Advancing-- that is the name of the game,” said Coach Eric Perry. “The good news is, we have a lot to work on, and it is a week away.”
Decorah captured the Sectional title with a 311. Clear Lake was runner-up with 330 and Waverly-Shell Rock was the third team to advance to District play with a 338. The District will be played at the Waverly Municipal Golf Course Friday, May 17. Joining the three teams will be qualifiers from the Sectional at West Delaware; they are West Delaware, Manchester, which won the Sectional with 306, along with Independence (326) and Oelwein (340).
Individually, Clear Lake was led by sophomore Dane Waldron. He finished fourth overall with a (40-39) 79. Decorah players swept the first three places, led by Peter Kephart with a 76, Bryce Pierce and Michael Peter, each with 77s.
“Dane led the way today. He did what he had to do,” said Coach Perry. “Dane has been a solid scorer when he uses his head.”
Tommy Schick started off well for the Lions with a 39 through nine holes. He struggled to finish and ended the day with a (39-43) 82. Shawn Snelling had just the opposite experience. He opened with a 47, but came back to score a 36 on the back nine for an 83. Austin Rurup rounded out the team scoring with a (41-45) 86.
