Colon turned back at NCAA meet
CLHS standout finishes one win short of top eight All-American
Joe Colon, wrestling as a red-shirt sophomore for the University of Northern Iowa, fell one win short of achieving All-American status at the NCAA Wrestling Meet held in St. Louis, Mo. last week.
Colon, of Clear Lake, ended his season one win away from a top eight finish at 133-pounds.
Colon lost his quarterfinal and fourth round wrestleback matches to Illinois’ B.J. Futrell and Virginia Tech’s Devin Carter, respectively. Colon commenced Panther competition Friday, as he took on Futrell of Illinois in the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket. The No. 4-seeded Futrell caught Colon early on and pinned the No. 5 seed in :44 seconds. Futrell’s victory snapped Colon’s 20-match win streak, dating back to late December when Colon’s only two losses of the season occurred at the Midlands Championships. Having defeated Colon at Midlands as well, Futrell has accounted for two of his three losses.
