Schmalen, Bieber and Kellogg move on
Three Clear Lake wrestlers have advanced to the District wrestling meet this Saturday at Forest City. Ryan Schmalen (106), Matt Bieber (120) and Logan Kellogg (182) will all compete for the chance to go to State. The top two finishers from Saturday’s Sectional meet at Algona qualified for Districts. Action will begin at noon in Forest City.
“We always hope to get more guys through, but that’s the way it goes,” said Clear Lake Head Wrestling Coach Gary Weber. “Three wrestlers placed third, narrowly missing a trip to Districts. Carson Farmer, Blake Kelso and Brice Wilcke are all alternates and could still qualify if a wrestler is sick or injured.”
Here is a recap of Sectional Tournament performances:
106: Ryan Schmalen, first place. Ryan is getting better everyday. He beat a very good Forest City wrestler and is primed to make it to State. He has a revenge match first round against Osage and he can be in Des Moines. I like our chances.
113: Brennen Doebel, fifth place. Brennen had 10 wins at 115 pounds this season and he weighs 89! What a tribute to his effort. We are very excited about his future.
120: Matt Bieber, second place. Matt lost 1-0 in the finals. I believe he can be the District champion next week. Again his first match is the most important of the day.
126: Blake Kelso, third place. Blake has had a great year. He lost in his wrestleback to get to Districts. Hopefully that motivates him to keep improving.
132: Carson Farmer, third place. Carson also had a great year. Our staff is going to work on some technical things with him and get him to state next year.
138: Jacob Baker, fourth place. Jacob beat a very good Humboldt wrestler in the first round to make the semi finals and had a great day. He always gave 100 percent and was inspirational to our staff on how hard he worked all four years. We will all miss Jacob.
145: Aaron Boeshart, fourth place. Aaron had a big first round win over a good Estherville wrestler and then lost twice. He is a junior and he, too, could get to State next year if he works hard in the next year.
152: Connor Nosbisch, fourth place. Connor avenged a loss to a good Estherville wrestler in the first round. He was the sixth seed and upset the third seed. Connor is just a sophomore and is going to continue to get better.
160: John Glynn, fifth place. John had a good fifth place match, beating a kid with 20 wins. He also improved a bunch as the year went on.
170: Brice Wilcke, third place. Brice had the most balanced weight class. Every wrestler had a winning record at his weight. Once again, we get him back for one more year and he should make it to Des Moines next year.
182: Logan Kellogg, first place. Logan was dominating Saturday. He pinned a ranked wrestler from Webster City in the finals and is on track to meet his goal.
195: Cain Roth, sixth place. Cain drank water to get up to 172.1 pounds so he could wrestle 195 and help the team. Cain is a senior and is everything our staff asked of him. Just like Baker, he will be missed.
285: Mitchel Jordan. Mitchel improved so much this year. He nearly upset a good Humboldt wrestler with a winning record in the first round. This is just his second year ever wrestling and he is poised to have a great junior year.
