Lions gain conference win

The Clear Lake boys dropped a non-conference game against powerhouse Mason City last week, but then righted the ship for a conference victory over Eagle Grove Friday.  The Lions now have a record of 4-7 overall and are 4-5 in the North Central Conference.

    The Lions dug themselves a hole early at Mason City Monday, Jan. 9.  A 10-0 lead and a notable performance by Mason City senior guard Sam Skogen lifted the Mohawks,

60-47.  Skogen became the fourth player in MCHS school history to score 1,000 career points.  He scored 24 points against the Lions to boost his total to 1,018 career points.
    “I thought we played them fairly even after the first quarter.  We had to play from behind all night,” said Coach Kevin Kahler.  “We didn’t shoot the ball real well tonight and they beat us in transition.”
    After their slow start, the Lions trailed 31-20 at the break but were able to pull within three points with three minutes left in the third by outscoring Mason City 12-11.  That was as close as the score would get.
    Seniors Ozzie Adams and Chase Crosby provided Clear Lake’s one-two punch, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively.  Crosby, who was 4/4 at the free throw line, pulled down six rebounds.  Adams had five boards.  Sophomore Pete Swenson scored eight points and also pulled down five rebounds.  Adams and Swenson each had three steals.
    Additional scoring was provided by Spencer Davidson with six and Tanner Tusha and Bryson Hamilton with four points apiece.  Tusha and Hamilton had four and six rebounds respectively.  Jack Abbas scored three points and Gavin Sheakley had one point for the Lions.

CL 62, Eagle Grove 41
    The Lions reversed their fortune by this time getting out to a big lead and holding it.  They outscored Eagle Grove 18-8 in the first quarter on their way to a 62-41 NCC win Friday night.
    Ozzie Adams was on fire, dropping seven three-pointers on his way to 34 points in the game. Adams was 11/20 shooting field goals and 7/10 from behind the three-point line.  He also made five of seven free throw attempts and had eight steals in the game.
