Tough competition downs the Lady Vikes

The Lady Vikes faced some stiff competition in recent basketball action, falling to two very good teams.
NSK/A-R 48, Ventura 19
    It wasn’t the usual Ventura girls team that took the floor Tuesday night, Dec. 6, against NSK/A-R.

    “We were really out of sync from the beginning to the end,” said Coach Rod Huber.  “Our concentration and attention to the fundamentals really hurt us in this game.  NSK/A-R will exploit any weakness they can find and we showed them a lot tonight.”
    Ventura held tough in the first quarter, only giving the Eagles a three-point lead, 11-8.
    NSK/A-R was able to widen the gap in the second quarter for a 22-13 halftime score.
    The game really turned in the third quarter.  Ventura’s leading scorer, Emily Mathews, was pulled with foul trouble. The Eagles held the Lady Vikes scoreless for a 34-13 lead at the end of the third period.
    Turnover after turnover plagued the Lady Vikes in the final quarter and the Eagles cruised to an easy 48-19 victory.
    “I think that this game will serve as a much needed wake up call that we have to continue to practice with concentration and intensity or else we will have nights like this,” said Huber.
    Mathews led the team in scoring with eight points.  Courtney Younge added four, while Emily Spilman, Hallie Hall and Sydney Younge each contributed two points.  Shelby Rayhons had one point.
    Mathews led the team in rebounds with 11.  Rayhons grabbed six, while Sydney Younge had five and Morgan Ames and Courtney Younge each grabbed three rebounds.
    Spilman and Rayhons each had two steals to lead the team.  Ames collected one blocked shot.
