Quality competition makes for a long week for CL wrestling squad
The Clear Lake wrestling team endured a tough week against quality competition. The Lions battled Class 3A power Mason City, conference rival Clarion-Goldfield and participated in the Iowa Falls-Alden Tournament.
Mason City 50, CL 13
The Lions fought hard, but simply did not match up well against Mason City. Blake Kelso, Ryan Schmalen and
Brice Wilcke all recorded wins for the Lions in the 50-13 loss.
“Mason City is a very gifted team,” said Clear Lake Coach Gary Weber. “We actually had four guys get technical falls against them, but at least they were not pins. They fought off their backs which is what we want. Mason City is just more experienced than us this year.”
He noted Schmalen moved up to 113 pounds-- giving up 15 pounds and pulled out a big win for the Lions.

Coach Weber felt his team wrestled its best meet of the year, but fell 31-25 to Clarion-Goldfield.
