Lions’ Kellogg wins NCC title

Clear Lake’s 182-pounder Logan Kellogg became a two-time North Central Conference champion at Saturday’s conference tournament.  Matt Bieber  (120) and Blake Kelso (126) were runner-ups in their respective weight classes.

    As a team, the Lions finished sixth in the nine-team league race.  Webster City won the tourney with 206.5 points.  Clarion-Goldfield was second with 198 points.  It was a repeat NCC Tournament win for the Lynx, which last year broke Clear Lake’s streak of five consecutive NCC titles, which is a conference record.
    Kellogg, who last year won the NCC title at 189-pounds,was an 8-7 winner over St. Edmond’s Vinnie Harvey.
    Clear Lake also received second-place finishes from Matt Bieber (120) and Blake Kelso (126).  Bieber lost to C-G’s Aaron Anderson in the finals.  Anderson is undefeated this season.  Kelso topped an Algona competitor in the semi-finals to reach the championship match. Defending state champion Brance Simms, of Humboldt, pinned Kelso in the finals.
    Also for the Lions, Ryan Schmalen (106) and Brice Wilcke (170) placed third; Carson Farmer (132) was fourth; Jacob Baker (138) and Aaron Boeshart (145) were fifth and Connor Nosbisch (152) and John Glynn (160) were sixth.
    Here are Coach Gary Weber’s comments about his wrestlers’ performances:
    106: Ryan Schmalen, third place.  He possibly could have gotten second if he had been on the other side of the bracket.  Ryan is doing a nice job.
    113: Brennen Doebel, did not place.  He is giving up 25 pounds, which makes it tough.
    120: Matt Bieber, second place.  Matt lost to an undefeated Clarion wrestler in the finals.
    126: Blake Kelso, second place.  Blake did awesome.  He beat the Algona kid in the semifinals-- he had lost 18-4 to him early in the year.  He was beaten by the defending State champion in the finals.
    132: Carson Farmer, fourth place.  Carson is wrestling hard and it will pay off.
    138: Jacob Baker, fifth place.  Jacob consistently goes as hard and he can and that is what we are looking for.
    145: Aaron Boeshart, fifth place.  Aaron beat the Algona wrestler in overtime that he lost to twice earlier in the year.
    152: Connor Nosbisch, sixth place.  Connor is only a sophomore and is still learning.  He is doing well for a sophomore.
    160: John Glynn, sixth place.  John beat the St. Ed’s wrestler that earlier defeated him.  He, too, is improving.
    170: Brice Wilcke, third place.  Brice is having a great year.  We have a few technical points to iron out and he will be ready for his State run.
