Lawrence Halsne

Lawrence E. Halsne, 88, of Clear Lake, died Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with Pastor Kirk Wilkie officiating.  Military honors were provided by the Clear Lake VFW and private committal services took place in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Larry’s name to Central Gardens or Hospice of North Iowa. 

Larry was born on Nov. 15, 1925 in Clear Lake, the son of Ole and Minnie (Hall) Halsne. He graduated from Hanlontown Schools and during World War II, joined the Army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division.  After leaving the service, Larry returned to a lifetime in Clear Lake.  He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Peggy Sorensen, in 1949, and after a few years of “city” living, they moved to an acreage north of town to raise their family.  There Larry enjoyed riding and boarding horses, farming a few acres and feeding the birds.  In 1997 Larry and Peg left the acreage to their current home on N. 8th Street.  Larry enjoyed a long career at Interstate Power and enjoyed, even more, his 26 years of retirement.

  Larry will be remembered for his love of family, his commitment to faith, and his integrity, honor and loyalty.  He was a proud member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department, the Jaycees, and for many years he assisted the DNR with their gill netting operation.  Larry was proud of a life lived in Clear Lake and was an ambassador for the city (just ask any new face who entered the deli during coffee time).

  Larry also enjoyed bird watching, hunting, fishing, golfing, following the Hawkeyes, traveling with Peggy, his lifelong friends, coffee at the deli and especially his grandchildren.  He may have enjoyed a practical joke or two, as well.

  Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Peggy; daughter, Laurie Ungs and her husband, Curt; daughter, Kim Knight; grandchildren, Casey Ungs, Katelyn Ungs, Addie Knight and Olivia Knight; sisters-in-law, Helen (James) Halsne and Elaine (Milton) Halsne; and several nieces and nephews. 

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe, Oline and James; and sisters, Irene McMullin and Stella Thompson.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangments.
