Lady Vikes drop two hard fought games

The Ventura girls dropped two games last week, one a conference match-up and the other a non-conference tilt.

    Some foul trouble derailed the Lady Vikes Tuesday night.  They dropped a conference matchup at home to NSKAR.
    The first quarter was close, but NSKAR managed a one point lead, 8-7.  Ventura’s leading scorer, Emily Mathews, got into foul trouble early and was sidelined for a majority of the game.  By halftime the Eagles led, 16-11.

    NSKAR came out strong following the break and sunk two three-point shots to get things rolling.  At one point in the third quarter the Eagles had gained an 11-point advantage, but the Lady Vikes closed the gap to 29-20 by the end of the third quarter.
    Ventura got to within three points in the fourth quarter, before turnovers let the Eagles outscore the Lady Vikes 10-0 in the final minutes of play for the final, 43-30.
    “We played extremely well despite the loss,” said Coach Rod Huber.  “I though we battled all night.  Every game I am seeing improvement.”
    Shelby Rayhons was the leading scorer with 10 points, followed closely by Emily Mathews with nine points.  
    Rayhons and Mathews also led the team under the boards with seven rebounds apiece.  Emily Spilman and Morgan Ames each grabbed four rebounds.
    Hallie Hall and Ames grabbed four steals apiece, while Spilman had three.  Mathews had two blocked shots and Spilman and Ames each had one blocked shot.

    The Lady Vikes battled hard, but were unable to pull off an overtime victory against Northwood-Kensett on Thursday, Jan. 19.
    “We had to play without our leading scorer, Emily Mathews, who is out with an injury,” said Coach Rod Huber.  “I was proud of the way the other girls stepped up.”
