Dorothy Newburg

Dorothy E. Newburg, 97, of Mason City, died Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.  Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., with Rev. Sid Bohls officiating.  Per her wishes, her body was cremated and there will be no visitation. Inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, for the benefit of Foreign Missionaries or a charity of the donor’s choice to relieve World Hunger.  Online condolence may be

Dorothy Ethel Matson, the youngest daughter of Swedish immigrants, Emma Wilhelmina Sofia Strom and Nels (Mattisson) Matson, was born in Franklin County, Iowa, on April 25, 1916.  She was baptized at the Swedish Lutheran Church in Dayton, Iowa, on Oct. 7, 1916, by Pastor N.E. Dron.  Dorothy was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.  Her family moved to a farm north of Clear Lake in 1921.  She attended Lincoln Township rural school and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1933, and was a member of the National Honor Society her senior year.  She graduated from Hamilton School of Commerce, Mason City, was employed by Mason City Brick and Tile Co., and later worked at Metalcraft, Inc. retiring in 1984. 

Dorothy was married to Melford S. (Sam) Newburg at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1941.  Their son, Justin Adrian, was born Oct. 17, 1945.  Both preceded her in death, as did her parents, brothers, twins Hans and Ferd and their wives, Mildred (Zobel) Matson and Ruby (Shook) Matson, and her sister, Frances (Matson) Lyons. 

Dorothy was a charter member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City.  She was active in St. Paul Women of the ELCA attending national and district meetings of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  She enjoyed traveling and visited Scandinavia including relatives in Sweden.  She also enjoyed a group tour to the Holy Land and many Elderhostels in the United States. 

Dorothy was thankful for relatives, neighbors and friends, especially the new friends at Good Shepherd Health Center, both residents and staff.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter-in-law,  Ann Budolfson Newburg of Iowa Falls, Iowa; nieces and nephews,  Vera (Chuck) Walk, of Mason City, Evelyn (Dick) Davis, of Altoona, Iowa, Ray (Dorothy) Matson, of Mason City,  Dick (Bonna) Matson, of Mason City, Jon (Linda) Matson, of Clear Lake, Arvid (Dixie) Matson, of Clear Lake, Corinne Conaway, of LaPere, Mich., Sharon (Robert) MacDonald, of Nampa, Idaho, and Dr. Robert (Iris) Givler, of Belton, Mo.   

Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory, Mason City.
