CL girls win a nail biter

The Clear Lake girls handed Algona only their second North Central Conference loss in a 49-47 game played Tuesday, Jan. 17, on the Lions’ home court.  The Lions, now 8-5 overall and 8-3 in the league, sit just one game behind second place Algona

(10-4) in the NCC standings.  
    A strong third quarter, during which the Lions outscored the Bulldogs 19-14, helped lift the Lions to the win. The burst broke the 18-18 halftime score to put the Lions ahead 37-32 heading into the final frame.
    Algona tied the contest at 37-37, but Clear Lake took the lead for good on a three-point goal by Megan Loux with 3:15 left in the contest.  Clear Lake made nine of 19 free throw attempts in the final quarter to secure the win.
    Algona had cut the Lions’ lead to two points with two made free throws with :06 remaining.  They then fouled Meg Monson, who went to the free throw line and missed a pair.  The Bulldogs then raced the ball down the floor uncontested, but missed a 10-foot shot at the buzzer which would have tied the game.
    “There is always something to take from a game and tonight was our free throw shooting,” said Coach Bart Smith.  “We shoot the ball well, I just think it was the situation we were in.  It’s nice to be put in a situation like that and still get a win.  The next time that happens, I have confidence in our girls that they will - Read More Via e-Edition
