Cardinal volleyball team coming on strong
Things are coming together for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team. The team picked up a big win over Newman Catholic and placed second in a tournament onSaturday.
GHV 3, Newman 0
The Cardinal offense was clicking on all cylinders Tuesday night, when GHV hosted Newman Catholic.
“The girls controlled the tempo of the first game,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “We’ve talked about finishing a game strong, so it was nice to see them close out the match in three games.”
GHV dominated the first match, 25-9. The Knights made a few adjustments in the second set and picked up their play a bit, but the Cardinals still easily won the match, 25-12. Newman got it together in the third match and gave GHV a run for their money. The Cardinals won the final match by only four points, 25-21.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Emily Spilman led the offense with eight and six kills respectively. Hannah Lau knocked down four of her own and Madee Hejna and Sydney Younge each had one kill.
Mallory Van Oort led the defense with five digs. Spilman, Younge and Hejna each had three.
Younge led the team in assists with 13.
Hejna was the leader at the service line, serving at 100 percent, collecting 10 points and three aces. Mikah Millard also had a good night serving. She was also 100 percent, collecting eight points and one ace. Sydney Younge had four ace serves and collected 10 points for the night.
B-K Tournament
Saturday was an exciting day for the Cardinals, making it to the championship round in the Belmond-Klemme Tournament. They fell just short of claiming first place honors and finished the day as runner-ups to Iowa Falls-Alden.
