Bieber, Kellogg capture championship titles
Wrestler place fourth in Clear Lake Invite
Logan Kellogg and Matt Bieber both won titles Saturday at the eight-team Clear Lake invitational. Both wrestlers pinned their opponents in the finals to highlight the Lion squad. Three other Lions were in the finals but lost. Ryan Schmalen, Carson Farmer and Brice Wilcke all placed second.
“I thought we showed improvement from Thursday. We had a little more hustle and intensity. We were only 10 points out of second as a team” stated Coach Gary Weber.
Here are the individual results for the Clear Lake wrestlers and comments from Coach Weber:
106: Ryan Schmalen, second place. Ryan had a great semifinal win over a very good Forest City wrestler and then lost to a much bigger Charles City wrestler. I am not one to make excuses, but Ryan weighs in at 101 and his opponents are weighing over 110 when he wrestles them. They have a distinct advantage. He is wrestling well.
113: Brennen Doebel has been ill.
120: Matt Bieber, first place. Matt pinned his way through his second consecutive tournament. He is really coming on. He is 16-3 and ready for the stretch run.
126: Blake Kelso, fourth place, 2-2. Blake listens to what we tell him. He has improved a bunch from last year and is 16-8 on the year.
132: Carson Farmer, second place. Carson wrestled with a lot of heart on Saturday. He was trailing 6-2 in the semi finals and never gave up and came back with a big pin.
132: T.J. Hauser, fifth place. T.J picked up two big varsity wins. We had wild card entries and he did very well in his first varsity tournament.
138: Jacob Baker, third place. Jacob wrestled very well to get a third place finish. We are fine tuning his technique and it is showing up in the win column.
138: Rowdy Yates, 0-2. Rowdy wrestled the Algona kid very tough and gained valuable experience.
145: Aaron Boeshart, 0-2, did not place.
152: Connor Nosbisch, fourth place, 2-2. Connor is just a sophomore and is 13-9 and improving each week.
160: John Glynn, fifth place. John showed big improvements on the scores against some previous opponents. He, too, is making strides in the right direction.
170: Brice Wilcke, second place. Brice is having a good year. He beat the number one seed in the semi finals.
182: Logan Kellogg, first place. Logan is 16-1 and working as hard as anyone we have ever had the privilege to coach.
195: Noah Holt is injured and did not participate.
285: Mitchell Jordan, 0-2, did not place. Mitchell is improving and it will translate into wins in the near future. This is just his second year wrestling.
