It was a tough week for the Ventura boys basketball team. They dropped two games, one a conference tilt and the other a non-conference match-up.
North Iowa 52, Ventura 28
The Vikings found out why the North Iowa boys basketball team is rated ninth, as the Bison toppled the Vikings, 52-28, in a non-conference game on Monday, Dec. 19 in Buffalo Center.
North Iowa came out strong and ran a faced paced game to jump to a 21-5 first quarter lead. The Bison kept up the pace and stretched the lead to 32-11 by halftime.
The Vikings had a hard time getting a basket to fall, while the majority of the Bisons’ shots were golden.
“North Iowa is a great team, but we definitely thought the score should have been closer than it was. We came out very flat and didn’t show signs of life until the game had pretty much already been decided,” said Coach Chad Brown.
Joel Watson led the scoring with eight points. Also scoring for the Vikings was Jace Byers with six, Ryan Schmitz added five, Joel Toppin collected four, Sam Treloar chipped in three and Wyatt Winkelman had two. Watson, Schmitz and Treloar all hit one three-point shot.
Byers and Toppin led the team under the boards with seven rebounds apiece. Schmitz grabbed four rebounds, while Treloar, Watson and Shawn Murphy all had three rebounds apiece.
WB-M 30, Ventura 16
Usually when a team can hold their opponent to 30 points, they win the game. That wasn’t the case in Tuesday night’s matchup between West Bend Mallard and Ventura.
Ventura had a tough night from beginning to end, with every player on the team having an off night.
The Wolverines opened the game with a 7-0 lead before Ventura scored. A tough defensive battle on both sides of the ball kept the score low. The score at halftime was a low, 12-11, with West Bend Mallard leading by one point.
A stretch of Viking turnovers in the third quarter led to a 21-14 third quarter advantage for the Wolverines.
