The Clear Lake Lions looked like the number one ranked team that they are, as they pounded Hampton-Dumont 54-0 Friday night at Lions Field. The win clinched the District 3 title for the Lions (8-0, 6-0) and provided their 32nd straight district victory.
Clear Lake’s 40th straight regular season win got off to a quick start, as Zac Bendickson picked off an H-D pass attempt and returned it 50 yards behind good blocking with barely over two minutes gone off the clock. Logan Kracht’s kick made the score 7-0.
The Bulldogs responded with a gutsy move, going for it on fourth and one at the 40, but the effort backfired. The Lion offense rewarded their defense by taking the ball to the end zone on six plays. Cody Maulsby scored the first of his three touchdowns on the night, scoring from one yard out. This time the snap for the kicker was low and the extra point missed wide, 13-0.
After another four-and-out for H-D, Clear Lake quarterback Ozzie Adams connected on his longest pass play of the season, a 67 yard completion to Jake Kockler. The kick was good for a 20-0 lead after one quarter of play.
Matt Bieber kept the scoring going early in the second quarter on a six yard run to the endzone, 27-0. The two teams exchanged possessions until the final minute of the first half when the Lions needed just seven plays to move the ball 47 yards. Adams finished the drive and Kracht added the PAT for a 34-0 halftime score. In the first half, the Lions dominated with 279 yards of offense, along with a 50 yard interception return, compared to just 77 yards of offense for the Bulldogs.
Clear Lake’s first team started the second half, but most gave way to underclassmen to finish the job.
Maulsby scored twice in the third quarter on short runs and Carter Hand added a TD in the fourth for the most lopsided score in the history of the two schools. The Lions outgained the Bulldogs 369 to - Read More Via e-Edition
