The Ventura girls hosted Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ahyrshire in a conference showdown on Tuesday, Dec.13. The Lady Vikes dominated the game from beginning to end for a solid 54-31 victory.
“Our pressure really helped us in the start of the game,” said Coach Rod Huber. “We were able to overwhelm them in the first half and build a solid lead.”
The game was physical, with both teams collecting plenty of fouls, but balanced team scoring helped Ventura to capture a 37-17 halftime lead.
Good defense held the Raiders to only four points in the third quarter, 44-21. Ventura cleared the bench in the fourth quarter and gave everyone a hand in the win.
“We have several girls that are gaining confidence on the offensive end of the game. We still have a lot of work to do defensively, but I like the direction we are headed,” said Huber.
Emily Mathews led the team both offensively and defensively. Mathews collected 15 points to go along with her 13 rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and one steal.
A balanced scoring effort was accomplished by Emily Spilman with 12 points, Hallie Hall and Morgan Ames each added eight, and Courtney Younge and Alex Huse had four points apiece. Shelby Rayhons had two points and Sydney Younge collected one point.
Other rebound leaders included Sydney Younge and Huse with six rebounds apiece, while Ames collected five.
Spilman led the team in steals with five, while Hall, Ames and Huse each had three.
Assist leaders were Courtney Younge and Spilman with three apiece.
