Charles City Invitational
Megan Merfeld figured in a pair of fourth place finishes for the Lions at the Charles City Girls Comet Invitational Friday. Merfeldd ran a 28.66 in the 200 and anchored the Lions’ 4x200. That relay, which was clocked in 1:58.66, also
included Aspen Curtis, Mckenna Backhaus and Kirsten Reineke.
The Lions’ 4x100, with Curtis, Bailey Maulsby, Reineke and Merfeld was 6th in 57.70, while the Sprint Medley with Maulsby, Reineke, Backhaus and Merfeld finished eighth.
In the 200 meters, Backhaus ran a 29.54 to place ninth. Curtis was ninth in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:19.90. Katie Adams was 17th in 1:38.60. Adams also ran the 100 hurdles, and finished 17th in 23.25. Selena Borrill was 17th in the 100 meters in a time of 15.70, while Emily VanderPloeg was 23rd in 16.72.
Charles City won their meet with 42 points. West Fork and St. Ansgar rounded out the top three, each scoring 38. The remainder of the field included: Osage (35), North Butler (23), GHV (22), Jesup (18), Janesville (14), Newman (7), Tripoli (4), Clear Lake (4).
Brittany Bieber captured third place in the long jump to lead the Clear Lake girls at the Cardinal Relays in Garner last week. Bieber jumped 13’6”. The senior also anchored the Lions’ 4x200 which placed fourth. The relay also included Shelby Dickes, Mckenna Backhaus and Kirsten Reineke. The group crossed the finish line in 2:00.39.
The 800 Medley was fifth, with Dickes, Bieber, Backhaus and Megan Merfeld running a 2:05.92. The 4x100 with Dickes, Aspen Curtis, Reineke and Bieber was seventh in 58.16.
In individual events, Dickes was eighth and Reineke 12th in the 100 meter dash in 13.88 and 14.32 respectively. In the 200, Backhaus was seventh and Maulsby 13th in 29.20 and 30.87. Merfeld picked up a fourth place finish in the 400 meters, running 1:05.67. Curtis was eighth in the 400 hurdles in 1:20.84 and 15th in the 100 hurdles in 20.84. Selena Borrill finished 14th in the long jump with a mark of 11’3”.
Clarion-Goldfield took home the team title with 107 points, followed by Lake Mills with 106 and GHV with 103. Clear Lake was last in the nine-team field with 12 points.
