John Hunchis


John F. Hunchis, 76, of 43061 Maple Dr., Lake Mills, Iowa, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 in his home.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012 from 5 -7 p.m. at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, Iowa, with a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m.  Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m.,Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with Rev. Rodney Allers officiating and Monsignor Wayne Ressler co-officiating. Internment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with a luncheon following at St. Joseph.  Family suggests memorials to John F. Hunchis memorial fund.

John was born Dec. 18, 1935 in Mason City, the son of Fred and Kathleen (Dorsey) Hunchis.  Later he and his siblings were adopted by his step mom, Julia (Spaanum) Hunchis.  While attending school John was very involved in athletics, including basketball and baseball.  He graduated from Plymouth High School 1954 and then attended St. Thomas College.  

John married Carol Jordan, Dec. 26, 1978 in Albert Lea, Minn.

He owned and operated Hunchis Cattle Co. rural Plymouth, Iowa, where he bought and sold cattle through out the United States and raised and raced quarter horses.  He later sold cars in the North Iowa area and most recently was employed by Forest City Ford.

He was an avid and competitive golfer and enjoyed playing various courses, both regional and abroad, and built his home on number one fairway at Rice Lake Golf and Country Club.  John enjoyed entertaining and grilling out, attending his children’s and grandchildren’s events, landscaping around his new home and planning an annual sporting event with his family.  One of John’s favorite things to do was spontaneously travel with his best friend and wife, Carol.  He was very proud of his catholic faith and was a loyal Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan.  He was a past board member of Rice Lake Golf and Country Club.

John is survived by his wife, Carol Hunchis, Lake Mills; five children, Mary (Jim) Stichter, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Francie (Randy) Maakestad, Plano, Texas, Julie (Roger) Morrison, Omaha, Neb., John (Candee) Hunchis, Northwood, Iowa, and Jordan (Jill) Hunchis, Rochester, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, Jamie Sickles, Jill Mast, Patrick Schneider, Meagan Schneider, Jimmie Hunter, John (Jack) Stichter, Joseph Stichter, Katie Maakestad, Matthew Maakestad, Anna Calgaard, Sarah Calgaard, Nicole Morrison, Hannah Hunchis and Molly Hunchis; three great-grandchildren, Keira Sickles, Leah Sickles and Stella Mast; one brother, William (Bettie) Hunchis, Scottsdale, Ariz.; one sister, Katy (Lowell) Holden, Burnsville, Minn.; brother-in-law, William (Jeanne) Reynolds, Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Hunchis; mother, Kathleen Dorsey and his adoptive mother, Julia Hunchis; sister, Marianne Reynolds; aunt, Dorothy Hunchis; and a nephew, Billy Reynolds.

The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care John received from Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minn. and Hospice of Albert Lea, Minn.  

Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
