Sonya Ryan

Sonya S. Ryan, 71, 1314 2nd Ave. N., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012 at her daughter, Shelly Kirk’s, home in Thompson, Iowa.  A funeral service was held Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at the First Baptist Church, Mason City, Iowa with Rev. Ron Stein officiating.  Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church or the Humane Society.  

     Sonya was born Oct. 28, 1940 in Mason City, the daughter of Roger and Jane (Etzel) Grimm.  She graduated from Mason City High School in 1958.  Sonya married Larry Romig and they lived in Clear Lake.  While living in Clear Lake she volunteered for the First Congregational Church and the Holt adoption agency for many years.  She was a CNA for home health nursing agency’s.  Later in life she and her husband, Greg, owned and operated Mr. K’s in Buffalo Center, Iowa from 1997-2005.

     Sonya married Greg Ryan July 25, 1989 in Phoenix, Ariz.  They lived there four years and then moved back to Clear Lake.  She was a peer facilitator at Prairie Ridge, loved animals and spending time with her family.  Sonya attended First Baptist Church in Mason City.

     Sonya is survived by her husband, Greg Ryan, Clear Lake; two daughters, Tawnya Gene Romig-Foster and her husband, Tad, Lakewood, Colo., and Shelly Diane Kirk and her husband, Mike Mathis, Thompson; two brothers, Roger Grimm, Mich., and Doug Grimm, Forest City, Iowa; two sisters, Diane Bailey, Clear Lake, and Arnita Meinders, Thornton, Iowa; five grandchildren, Christopher, Shawn, Joshua and Jessica Kirk and Finn Foster; one great-grandson, Cooper Kirk; and several nieces and nephews.

     Sonya was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Morton Grimm.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
