Boys top Decorah to claim District championship and a berth at State Golf Meet

The Lions shot their best round of the year and upset number one ranked Decorah to earn a District championship and berth at the Class 3A State Golf Meet Friday and Saturday in Ames.  Clear Lake won the District played at Waverly with a fifth score tie-breaker, 306-307.  The top two teams both advance to State.
    “I think we are starting to pick up momentum,” said Coach Eric Perry, whose team finished 17 strokes behind Decorah at the Sectional meet.  “It seems weird this is

happening again, but we always strive to play our best golf by the end of the year.  We did have our ups and downs, so this makes all the hard work that much special.”
    Luke Monson again led the Lions.  He lost a sudden death tie-breaker to Decorah’s Nick Nelson, the number two ranked golfer in the state. 
    “Luke is right with him now, and should be considered a strong contender for an individual title.  Luke finished one stroke off the lead and tied with Nelson at fourth last year.  It should be a fun tournament to watch,” added the coach.
    Treslyn Allison (36-40) 76, Tyler Sherman (40-37) 77 and Jon Carew (41-40) 81 supplied the top four scores for the Lions.  Dane Waldron’s (42-40) 82 gave the Lions the District title.  Waldron shot two strokes better than Decorah’s fifth golfer, Michael Peter, who had an 84. 
    “Dane showed why every team member counts.  Dane struggled for some of the day, but showed true grit and kept up down the stretch knowing each stroke mattered,” said Coach Perry.
    “Treslyn shot a very good round also.  He was a little disappointed by the way he finished, but he came through in our biggest meet of the year with his career best round.  We will need Treslyn to keep it going if our team wants to raise the trophy again,” continued the coach. “Tyler, now golfing in the number four position, showed why - Read More Via e-Edition
