Lady Vikes top G-T; fall to Newman

It was a week of highs and lows for the Ventura volleyball team, picking up one win and one loss.

    The Lady Vikes were pumped up for their last regular season home meet and Parent’s Night, as they downed Graettinger-Terril in three games, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-23.
    “It was a nice win.  I am proud of my team for their work.  We made a couple of changes in the line-up and the girls took the changes and ran with them,” said Coach Abby Roenfanz.

    Emily Mathews had an outstanding night in all aspects of the game.  She was 18/21 hitting with 11 kills.  At the service line she was 8/12 with two aces.  She also collected three digs, one assist and one solo block.
    Morgan Ames was 12/19 hitting with five kills and she had one solo block.
    Sebelia Markle led the team at the service line, connecting on 15/17 serves with two aces.  She was also 2/2 hitting with one kill.
    Hallie Hall was 11/11 at the service line with two aces.  She also contributed five digs.
    Brittani Watson was 10/12 hitting with four kills.
    Shelby Rayons was 11/13 hitting with three kills.  She was 4/6 serving and had four digs.
    Mandi Thoe was 5/6 serving and she was 1/1 hitting with one kill.  Miranda Frederick was 4/4 serving. 
    Courtney Younge led the team in assists with 20.  She was also 7/8 serving and 1/1 hitting with one kill.

Newman 3, Ventura 1
    Poor passing doomed the Lady Vikes against Newman Catholic on Thursday, Oct. 13, at Newman.  Ventura dropped the first game, 25-23, battled back for the second game for a 25-23 win, but dropped the last two, 25-17 and 25-12.
    “We did not show up for three out of the four games.  We are very capable of playing much better than we did,” said Coach Abby Roenfanz.  “Our passing was not good, which puts a lot pressure on our setter and the hitters get frustrated because they don’t get the sets they need.”
    Emily Mathews once again led the team.  She collected 11 kills on 23/25 hits.  She was 6/8 at the service line with one ace.  She also contributed 22 digs, 1 assisted block and one solo block.
