Two conference teams top the Lions

A pair of North Central Conference opponents topped the Clear Lake volleyball team in regular season action last week.

    The Lions (1-14) opened the week playing Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Clarion-Goldfield.  The Cowgirls won in three close games, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16. 
    Despite the loss, Coach Scott Swenson said he was encouraged by the energy and productivity helping the Lions off the bench.

    “The players coming off the bench are playing with a lot of energy and are being very productive for us.  Jenna Peterson kept us in the three sets with her serving, kills and digs.  Her versatility is her calling card.” 
    Peterson finished the match with 11/11 serving, 11 digs and seven kills.  Emily Willms, Brianna Haugen and Anne Tesar all combined for seven digs, coming in on a reserve role .
    Statistical leaders for the Lions included Carly Ouverson with 16 assists. She was also 9/10 on serves with two aces and four digs.  Kaitlyn Pitzen had six kills, two blocks, six digs and was 9/10 on serving.   Jeanette Davis and Taylor Julsen both combined for six kills.
    In the back row, Ryan Pierce had nine digs and was 4/5 serving.  Megan Kopriva had eight digs and was 6/7 on her serves .
    “We just could not keep the control of the ball on our side and volleyball is a game of quick tempo and rallies.  We need to learn to control our own destiny better,” said Coach Swenson.

Garrigan 3, CL 0
    Bishop Garrigan swept the Lions 3-0 on the road Thursday night.  The Golden Bears were 25-16, 25-17, 15-17 winners.
    “You learn through adversity and we’ve certainly had our fair share this season, but hopefully we’ll learn from it and find out who we really are as a team,” said Coach Swenson.
