Rough week for the Clear Lake volleyball team

It was a rough week for the Clear Lake volleyball team, as North Central Conference foes Humboldt and Hampton-Dumont swept the Lions, then North Iowa teams battled at the Forest City Tournament.

Humboldt 3, CL 0
Humboldt came to town Tuesday, Sept. 13, and swept the Lions, 3-0.  The Wildcats posted scores of 25-13, 25-14, 25-19.
“Humboldt came over to Clear Lake with a lot of good athletes and height.  They were well coached, too,” said Clear Lake Coach Scott Swenson.

“Humboldt took advantage of our miscues and they capitalized on them.  We’re a young team, but we had the benefit of learning from a lot of seniors last year.  We are not blessed with height, so we will have to win by being disciplined and tough-minded.”
Statistical leaders in the match included Carly Ouverson with 11 assists, Jenna Peterson with 7 kills, Kaitlyn Pitzen with six and Jeanette Davis with three.   Ryan Pierce and Megan Kopriva combined for 14 digs.  Pitzen and Kopriva were also team leaders at the service line.
“The student body and home crowd gave us tremendous support, too, and we were very appreciative of it,” added the coach.

Hampton 3, CL 0
Hampton-Dumont used their height advantage and posted a 1-0 victory over the Lions Thursday, Sept. 15.  Game scores were 25-13, 25-15, 25-19.
“Hampton’s middle blocker, who was 6’4”, and their outside hitters had a height advantage over our front row attackers, said Coach Swenson.  “Our girls gave a great effort in the net, but were a little overmatched.”
The Lions were led by Jenna Peterson’s six kills and Kaitlyn Pitzen’s four.  Carly Ouverson had 14 assists.  Ryan Pierce, Megan Kopriva and Emily Wilms combined for a total of 12 digs.

Forest City Tournament
Some of the area’s best teams took part in the Forest City Tournament Saturday.  Wins were hard to come by for the Lions.
Clear Lake opened play against Forest City and was defeated, 21-15, 15-8.  North Sentral Kossuth topped the Lions, 21-18, 21-4 and then number three ranked (2A) Lake Mills beat the Lions, 21-11, 21-10.  Boone beat the Lions 21-12, 21-13 and Spirit Lake came out on top, 22-20, 21-18.
For the day, the Lions were led by Carly Ouverson’s 32 assists. Jenna Peterson, Kaitlyn Pitzen and - Read More Via e-Edition
