Clear Lake’s Sam Jones earned an eighth place finish at the Class 1A State Tennis Meet played Friday and Saturday in Waterloo.
Jones, the only freshman in the Class 1A singles field, opened the tourney with a win over last year’s sixth place finisher, Will Hamilton, from Grinnell. Jones pulled out a
hard-fought victory by the score of 7-6 (7-4) and 6-1.
In the quarterfinals Jones faced the second seed in the meet, Alex Bernt, a senior from Waterloo Columbus. Bernt shut out Jones, 6-0 6-0.
In the consolation semi-finals Jones met Ryan Hageman, of Decorah. Jones got his game back on track and won, 6-3, 6-2.
Saturday’s action first included a match with Boone’s Chad Moklestad. The Boone senior posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Next, he played Wahlert senior Tom Runde for seventh and eighth place. He lost a close 7-5, 7-5 match to finish eighth.
