The Clear Lake boys cross country team saved their best for the North Central Conference Meet. The Lions finished as runner-up in the meet, held at Eagle Grove, to fourth ranked Algona. The Lions topped eighth ranked Fort Dodge St. Edmond and Humboldt for the first time this season.
Algona was the run away winner for the second straight year with 32 points. The Lions finished with 71, followed by St. Edmond with 82 and Humboldt with 121. The remainder of the field included Eagle Grove (141), Webster City (149), Bishop Garrigan (151), Iowa Falls-Alden (160) and Hampton-Dumont (260). Clarion-Goldfield had only three runners.
The Lions were led by Antonio DiMarco. DiMarco and 13th ranked Bo Hjelle, from Algona, traded the lead back and forth for the first 2.5 miles before Hjelle pulled away at the end. He crossed the finish line in 16:36. DiMarco was clocked in at 17:00.46. Jake Iverson also earned All-Conference honors with his 10th place finish in a time of 17:31.79.
Coach Nick DiMarco said Ryan Faught, Tanner Storbeck, Spencer Orr and Joe Schiller all passed many runners to help the team it its second place finish. Each also posted season-best times.
Faught ran a 17:39.29 to place 13th; Storbeck was 19th in 18:15.76; Orr was 27th in 18:35.10; and Schiller was 34th in 18:48.09. Alex Enabnit also competed in the varsity race, finishing 53rd in 19:54.59.
The Clear Lake girls were led by Jaci Ullrich, who placed 18th in 17:38. Close behind was Trudy Peterson, 20th in 17:44, and Logan Anderson, 22nd in 17:52, Courtney Anderson, 56th in 19:44, and Kirsten Reineke, 59th in 20:18, comprising the team scoring for the Lions.
“This set of senior girls have worked very hard and will be sorely missed next year,” said Coach DiMarco.
